On the afternoon of 5 December 1945, five United States Navy aircraft lifted off from Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale in Florida on what should have been a routine training exercise. The aircraft were General Motors TBM Avengers, powerful military planes widely used during the Second World War. The mission was known as Flight 19, and on board were fourteen experienced naval aviators undertaking a standard overwater navigation training flight.

Some buildings carry history quietly within their walls. Others seem to echo with it. Lilford Hall, set in the Northamptonshire countryside, is one of those rare places where the past feels close enough to touch. Over the centuries, it has been home to notable families, wielded political influence, and preserved an intellectual legacy. Yet between 2012 and 2013, it became the centre of one of the most extraordinary and baffling paranormal cases ever recorded.

Out of this desperate encounter emerged one of the most remarkable legends of the war: the story of the Angels of Mons. According to reports that circulated soon afterwards, supernatural figures appeared on the battlefield at the height of the fighting. Some accounts described radiant angels shielding British soldiers. Others told a more distinctly British tale, that of King Arthur and his ancient bowmen returning to defend the nation.
