The Kobold

The kobold is a creature from Germanic folklore, particularly associated with German mythology and medieval legends. Traditionally, kobolds were believed to be small supernatural beings that could either help or hinder humans depending upon how they were treated. Their nature varied greatly from story to story, making them both fascinating and unpredictable figures within European folklore.

In many tales, kobolds were household spirits somewhat similar to the British brownie. These domestic kobolds were said to live in homes, barns, ships, or mines, quietly carrying out chores such as cleaning, tending animals, or helping workers at night. However, they were also known for being mischievous and easily offended. If insulted, ignored, or treated disrespectfully, a kobold might hide tools, spoil food, create noise, or cause accidents.

One of the most famous forms of kobold was the mining kobold. German miners believed these underground entities inhabited caves and tunnels deep beneath the Earth. Some miners considered kobolds helpful spirits who warned workers of dangerous cave-ins or guided them towards valuable ore deposits. Others feared them as malicious beings responsible for strange sounds, disappearances, toxic gases, and mining accidents.

Interestingly, the chemical element cobalt takes its name from kobolds. Early miners often discovered ores that resembled silver but produced poisonous fumes when smelted. Believing malicious kobolds had cursed the ore or swapped valuable minerals for worthless material, miners named it “kobold ore,” which eventually became “cobalt.”

Descriptions of kobolds vary widely. Some accounts portray them as tiny goblin-like creatures with distorted features, glowing eyes, or animal characteristics. Others describe them as almost invisible spirits capable of shapeshifting into cats, children, mist, fire, or shadowy humanoid figures.

From a paranormal or occult perspective, modern interpretations sometimes connect kobolds with elemental spirits, interdimensional entities, or thought-form manifestations tied to locations and human emotions. In fantasy literature and gaming, kobolds have evolved into reptilian or dragon-like humanoids, though this is largely a modern reinterpretation rather than traditional folklore.

Like many legendary beings, the kobold exists somewhere between mythology, superstition, cultural storytelling, and the enduring human fascination with unseen worlds.

Paranormal Activity? Need Help? “Who ya’ gonna’ call…?”

We take an evidence-based approach inspired by Sherlock Holmes’ principle: facts first, theories second. As Isaac Asimov put it, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Therefore, we don’t respond to vague messages, such as “Contact me,” “I have a problem/picture/video,” or those that contain only a phone number.

The best way to get our attention and receive a response is to send a detailed, well-written, and respectful message, together with evidence - if there is any.

Images and/or video supporting evidence can be sent via our Facebook and Instagram pages.

We always try to prioritise emergencies, however; due to the high volume of general enquiries, we’re unable to respond to every message and request.

We hope to introduce a 24/7 emergency answering service in the future; however, for now, if you need help with extraordinary, mysterious, or malevolent anomalous activity, get in touch and we'll try to help. We monitor messages regularly.

Remember, please read the entire NEED HELP? section before contacting us.
