Are Ghost Hunting Apps Putting You at Risk?

A Mobile Phone Ghost Hunting App.

With the boom in popularity of paranormal television programmes over the past two decades, an entirely new genre of mobile phone applications has emerged. These so-called ghost hunting apps promise users a range of paranormal detection tools, from radar-style screens allegedly identifying the presence of spirits, to SLS (Structured Light Sensor) displays that show stick-like human figures said to represent ghosts. Others mimic devices such as the Ovilus, which claims to allow spirits to select words that then appear on a communication screen.

Although none of these apps can be considered scientific in any rigorous sense, they initially appeared harmless enough, novelty gadgets for curious, well-meaning amateurs with an interest in the paranormal. At face value, they seemed little more than digital entertainment dressed up as an investigation. That opinion, however, was challenged when the Paranormal Rescue team responded to an emergency request for immediate assistance.

It came as something of a surprise to learn that the client was a US Special Forces operative based at Fort Bragg. During a conference call, though, it was no surprise to hear how calmly and methodically he described a sudden outbreak of apparent paranormal activity in his home.

Earlier that day, he and a colleague had attended an event as honoured military guests, co-hosted by American musician David Ellefson of Megadeth, who is known for his interest in paranormal topics. Conversation naturally turned to that subject, and the event concluded without incident.

Later, back at home and waiting for his wife to return, the soldier decided to download a ghost hunting app from a reputable online app store, purely to pass the time. That decision marked a dramatic change in circumstances.

Almost immediately after installation, his phone crashed. The screen turned red, and text appeared reading: motorcycle, drunk, accident, killed, regret. Moments later, the phone returned to normal, and the app appeared to function correctly.

Then, the dogs reacted.

Their two German Shepherds leapt from their beds, ran directly to a specific wall in the lounge, and fixed their gaze halfway up it. Growling, hackles raised, they barked aggressively at something invisible to human eyes. Treats and commands had no effect. The dogs remained there throughout the night, as if guarding the home from an unseen presence.

At this point, he contacted Paranormal Rescue.

While waiting for assistance, the soldier researched recent motorcycle accidents in the area. He discovered that a fatal crash had occurred on the road directly outside the very wall the dogs were focused on.

Fortunately, Helen Renée, co-founder of Paranormal Rescue, performed a remote clearing. The soldier later reported that, without knowing any intervention was taking place, he suddenly noticed both dogs relax and return to normal behaviour. Only minutes later did he receive confirmation that the clearing had been carried out.

So what is the lesson from this unusual case?

Quite simply, although mobile phones and paranormal apps are often dismissed as unscientific toys. However, the fact is that no one can say with absolute certainty that they have no value; therefore, they should not be entirely ignored. More concerningly, their use may carry unforeseen risks, perhaps even considerable risks depending upon the spiritual vulnerability of the individual using the app.

In this case file we shared, thankfully, the individual involved was not a naïve paranormal believer seeking a thrill by playing with apps while exploring spooky old buildings and places. Instead, he was a cool, calm, and level-headed individual who admitted to being an open-minded sceptic, a highly trained special forces operative who is as physically and mentally tough as they come. He is also trained to embrace darkness as a friendly asset during covert combat operations. These important actors also make a deliberate, thought-projected, and enhanced thrill-seeking manifestation highly unlikely.

While further research is clearly needed, caution is advised. Most importantly, we strongly advise against the flippant use of any paranormal app or device for any form of divination; instead, treat them with cautious respect. If you, or anyone you know, has a serious problem with seemingly inexplicable issues, seeking experienced, professional help from a dedicated professional organisation like Paranormal Rescue is the wisest course of action.

Help, if Needed.

If you or someone you know repeatedly dismisses strange experiences while quietly feeling unsettled, early guidance can prevent escalation. Confidential help is available from Paranormal Rescue, which operates as a sort of fifth emergency service, addressing incidents that fall outside the remit of police, fire, medical, or breakdown services. When unexplained disturbances disrupt normal life, Paranormal Rescue provides calm, structured, evidence-based support.

Paranormal Activity? Need Help? “Who ya’ gonna’ call…?”

We take an evidence-based approach inspired by Sherlock Holmes’ principle: facts first, theories second. As Isaac Asimov put it, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

For this reason, we don’t respond to messages that are vague such as “Contact me,” “I have a problem/picture/video,” or contain only a phone number.

The best way to receive a response is to send a detailed, well written, and respectful message.

Image and/or video supporting evidence can be sent via our Facebook and Instagram pages.

Due to the high volume of enquiries, we’re unable to respond to every message and help request; therefore, we only respond to the cases that interest us the most.

We hope to introduce a 24/7 emergency answering service in the future; however, for now, if you need help with extraordinary, mysterious, or malevolent anomalous activity, please send a detailed message. We monitor messages regularly.
